The N&R has partnered with a few selected bloggers to appear as columnists in their paper. On the surface it seems like a really neat gesture. The mighty paper helps get blogging going in Greensboro. Blogging becomes so powerful that local politicians join in. Many of the N&R staff joins with blogs of their own. Greensboro becomes such a powerful blogging community it is frequently called Blogsboro. Why would the N&R not want to expand the project by giving space in their paper to the blogging elite? This could lift the voices of the people and make Greensboro a more democratic city. It could be a shining example of the people leading the leaders. What a great idea, as long as you stay on the surface. If you just take Keith Holliday type glances at this partnership, everything will be as peachy as the Mosaic Project. However, if you take a good look into the N&R's actions you will be able to see the danger ahead.
The Editor of the N&R is financially involved in the sale of the Canada Dry building. His wife's family owns it. The city wants to buy it. The last offer made was over three million dollars. It is currently being appraised for the second time. The first appraisal was incomplete. The property has serious environmental issues due to several underground fuel tanks and the cost of that clean up is yet to be determined. Wonder why we have not seen a feature story on that local government maneuver?
How come we did not see a story about council rejecting the first appraisal due to all of the unknowns present? Wonder why we did not see an editorial applauding the council, specifically Tom Phillips, for being awake enough to read the first appraisal and seeing it as incomplete? Did I miss something? Gotta look after the tax payer's money right? When the N&R editor gets up in the morning and goes to work is he more interested in what is good for the elite city staff instead of what is good for the people?
The N&R has also gone right along with the city during this police mess that is being made. Never once has the N&R questioned the structure of the investigation. Just last week the N&R had an article about former Deputy Chief Randall Brady and some of the specifics of a lie detector test he was given. The N&R failed to mention that Brady was given a lie detector test immediately after a four hour interrogation. That is not procedure and it is very much a part of the story. At least to me it is.
The city has confidential information that continues to end up in the N&R's hand. It comes at the oddest moments as well. The Project Homestead investigation is complete and the findings are few. The same time that news came about, the N&R magically gets the confidential RMA report. It has all been reported on the Troublemaker. It is important to mention that the facts of this story have been on the Troublemaker first. We tell you what they are about to tell you. Just check it out Here, Here, and Here.
With all of these ice bergs the N&R and the city elite staff are dodging, it probably wasn't a bad idea to make a nice gesture to the blogging community. Certainly the powers would not want their ship crashing into the wrong ice berg because of meddling bloggers. The N&R may have essentially bought several smaller publications for damage control.
One of my favorite bloggers and certain future Greensboro City Council members, David Hoggard, recently appeared with his first column in the N&R. I could not get past the following text from Hogg's blog post regarding his first column. Hogg reported, "What we know so far about the David Wray matter is bad enough....." The Troublemaker has covered this story closely and Known facts are hard to come by. Did I miss something?Did Hogg see something I did't? Is that even possible?
Dianned Bellamy-Small gave the report to Mazie Ferguson who then gave it to Ahearn. We know what the N&R has told us is in the RMA report. We do not know if the RMA report was fair and unbiased. We also know that there has been no criminal charges made. We know that the RMA investigation lasted around three weeks. We know the N&R would like nothing more than to hand the city David Wray's KKK outfit and his allegiance to white power. We know that has not been found yet. Trust me, it is not because the N&R isn't looking. We know that the city legal department and the city manager's office was in a heated battle with the David Wray police force over the Homestead investigation. There was no love lost between those parties.
There are other things that are known but the only other thing that is necessary to mention in this post is we know the city and the N&R can't go back from their stance. No matter what, Wray must be found guilty of something really bad. If there isn't an ice berg then one will be constructed. That is the real danger.
The city and the N&R need for everyone to shut up and let them tell their story. Just trust them. Trust the N&R. Trust Linda and Mitch. This trusting attitude was painfully displayed in Hogg's debut column. Hogg wrote, "By all indications, Greensboro is on an unavoidable collision course with some pretty nasty stuff. Even though we commoners are able to see hints of what is coming through various leaks and starts, and all we can really do is wait, along with our City Council, for the full extent of the damage to be realized."
The Troublemaker does not see this wait and see approach as the only alternative for the commoners. Don't just wait for the all powerful and omniscient N&R to distribute the results of the city's fair and just investigation. Open your eyes folks. When the ship does hit that ice berg you are going to pay for the repairs. Mutiny is not out of the question when the good of the whole is a stake. There are valid questions that are not being asked. The N&R has already picked their winner. The city has handed them their racists monster.
It all fits right into a nice package just in time for the GTRC final report. The N&R can stand and say, "Yes, we were a very big part of the GTRC process." The city can stand up and say, "Yes, we have removed a cancerous racist from our staff." Nice story. It has a beginning and an end. It is easy to understand and will make the left in Greensboro feel validated. However, the truth usually does not do that. Truth rarely makes folks feel good. The truth usually pisses everyone involved off. What Greensboro needs is some reality about the truth. It is my hope that the GTRC report will make everyone mad. If it does then it is a job well done.
I have fought racism, bad working conditions, slavery, environmental racism and bad local government in Greensboro for over 5 years. Take a deep breath. Do you smell that asbesotos? Exactly.
Because I am against those things all of the time, I can see that this Wray mess aint all it is said to be. Write this down, it will not be too long before the city will begin to announce that the Wray mess has little to do with race. They will say it has little to do with Hinson. I am telling you now it has little to do with truth. That is the biggest problem. If you know more than me let me know. I am sure all of the attorney's and court officials will be glad to read all about it on the Troublemaker.
I have been warned that if I continued to write about the city and the N&R that they would come after me. I have been told they might even try to make me out as a racist. I repsonded by saying that is true. I am a racist. I have always had major problems with white poeple. I really don't mind if they live around me. I just know that if they do I should rember to lock up. Holla!

"The N&R may have essentially bought several smaller publications for damage control."
You greatly overestimate the control the paper has over its contributing columnists. Hoggard could turn around and say the whole investigation of Wray is a huge joke if he wanted to, it's not like the N&R dicates what he or its other contributors say.
Also, people have been saying this is about more than race for some time now. For example, John Hammer laid that out quite clearly in his late January front-pager.
http://edcone.typepad.com/wordup/2006/01/hammer_on_wray.html
Trouble:
Are you saying John Robinson's wife's family owns a building that the city is selling for millions of bucks, and the paper has not reported on an overblown assessment presented to the potential buyer?
two things u greatly overestimate...the word could...and the rhino. Without reading the rhino...i can tell u that me and hammer time aint rapping about the same thing...ed..ed..ed..amazing how i can scoop all you and your buddies...time after time...be 100% correct..and u bring could....please try and keep up..."Hoggard could turn around and say the whole investigation of Wray is a huge joke if he wanted to, it's not like the N&R dicates what he or its other contributors say." it could happen...exxon could lower gas prices too...Cone Mills could have provided a safer enviorment for their workers.... that could have prevented the nov 3 1979 massacre...george bush could be a good president....mitch could be honest...linda could be nice...coulda, woulda and shoulda dont mean shit.
Ben,
I'm afraid you lost me on this.
Is it your contention that I am a part of some N&R enabled, powers-that-be conspiracy to figuratively hang David Wray?
I expected people to accuse me of being in cahoots with the N&R when I signed on, but I can promise you that even though my soul could very possibly be for sale, it has not been offered to the N&R for a paltry $.06 per word.
You say, about the Wray investigations, "There are valid questions that are not being asked." What are they? I'll ask them (I may have contacts that you don't have). If I don't like the answers, I'll dig.
It is my intention to be a mouthpiece for us "commoners". Use me... and if things check out, I'll throw some light on it..
Please don't write me off so fast as a co-conspiritor with the 'status-quo'. For the most part, I hate the status quo.
From the City Council statement, 1/25/06: "It is now clear that Chief Wray chose to withhold critical information from his superiors and City Council. For this reason alone, we believe the Manager’s actions are fully justified."
Again, people have been saying this is about more than race for a while now.
As for Hoggard, first you say he couldn't report the truth if it went against the N&R's version...Then you change that to he wouldn't...but you offer no reason for us to believe that.
Keep up the good work, it's important, you know I've been a supporter for a long time, just don't let the truth take collateral damage as you aim for the bad guys.
Whoa, Ben! I thought I was raw! Keep up the good work!
Ken B.
"As for Hoggard, first you say he couldn't report the truth if it went against the N&R's version...Then you change that to he wouldn't...but you offer no reason for us to believe that."
Actually, Ed, what happened is that first YOU said Trouble said something, then YOU said Trouble said something else.
All along, Trouble was saying the same thing: not that the N&R controls what Hoggard writes, but that the N&R might have chosen him because of what he tends to write, which works to their advantage.
When he explained it further, you said he was changing his story. What actually happened is that it took two times for you to comprehend it.
And Hogg, I didn't see where TM said you were a willing participant in the conspiracy. It was more that you could be a useful idiot for them, telling everyone to wait and see and trust the city. It's not that you are selling your soul, it's that they know how to steal it.
I'm paraphrasing. I like the way Trouble says it better.
But at least I read the damn post, guys.
what Chewie said. Yo Ed...u r confused. Your rhino times part...""It is now clear that Chief Wray chose to withhold critical information from his superiors and City Council. For this reason alone, we believe the Manager’s actions are fully justified." again...i think u dont know....how was that not about race???..that was about the black book...it dont get more racists than that..if u think the city ousted him for lying u r crazy and uninformed..and that makes a person w your power very dangerous,.....i have seen lots of department heads lie...hide things..and intimidate without any punishment...why punsih wray? butch has lied to council on tv on several occasions...but that doesnt count...cuz that is not gonna help ahearn become the next dorothy day...this entire shit is biased..if u r gonna clean house...then fucking clean it...dont just do one spot on the carpet...get to scrubbin .....what i am saying is...there were no civil rights violations..i know that...y'all dont yet...in time u may...but all of this may be witheld like homestead.....there is no real proof there is gonna be criminal charges so far...if they had them wray and brad would be cuffed and stuffed.....the race thing is gonna fall apart on the city...then they will start sayign things like...well..this really wasnt about race...cone...nobody ahs said that yet..u can pretend they have...but they havent...again..i just think u r lost in this..... i will say this is all about bad blood between miles and wray regarding homestead......and a pussy ass left that wants to jump on the band wagon w the cityand the N&R so they too can feel like a hero that saved the poor minorities....y'all aint gonna save shit without asking tuff questions...want an example...yo cone and hogg....why in the hell aint u got shit to say bout the cananda dry stuff? it dont matter that the N&R guy is invovled and could get some cash money off the deal? conflict fellas...conflict...with all that is going on the last thing i wanna hear about is the editior of the shit and wipe has some family invovled in the sale of a building...which mithc attempted to slip by council w a half ass appraisal and a inflated price...u dont follow that??? neither one of you asked about that...oh..i see...it is ok..it dont matter...cuz everyone is busy watching the great ahearn catch the evil wray..sorry folks...sounds like a big pile of bullshit to me....the timing on all of this is weird...way weird...and i dont trust many involved...the fight for justice and truth....really/ i dont think i had seen any of you in the previous battles....oh..i see....this is the only one that matters...forget the steps at saint james..which got replaced by the way...wanna know why they got replaced? .I will keep u updated as the story unfolds..I am the only one covering it.like it or not...it is the truth..the rest is just fairy tale wanna be bullshit..that is u N&R..that is u yes weekly...that is you news 2..all of u suck and are reporting like lil third grade white girls.....yo chewie...u single?
This is the part that confuses me if you aren't saying what I thought you said: "It probably wasn't a bad idea to make a nice gesture to the blogging community. Certainly the powers would not want their ship crashing into the wrong ice berg because of meddling bloggers. The N&R may have essentially bought several smaller publications for damage control."
To me, that suggests that the N&R is doing more than enlisting the services of gullible Hoggard to fill space on its pages. It sounds like you are saying the paper is buying him to keep him from meddling.
and as long as u and the other reasonable good white folks keep stepping around cananda dry..every part of canada dry...u prove me correct...address it...or is that not nice?
What is being "stepped around" on Canada Dry?
The News & Record routinely reports that the editor's wife's family owns the property when it writes about a possible sale. It did so when it reported that the sale to the city had been deferred in October.
Can you be more specific in saying what it is about the possible sale of the facility that needs to be addressed?
(cross-posted in the comments at Hoggard's blog -- can we choose one thread and follow it instead of the parallel threads?)
Ben-- Everything started with a Lt. who screwed up. He was involved in a car wreck in his Police car while on duty. He happened to have "a girl" in the car that was not approved or "registered" for a ride-along and she happened to have active outstanding warrants. Most officers believe he should have been demoted (at least) for this "infraction". Now that was just the start---her name linked her to the drug-ring that was reported by the N&R. Now the story got more interesting--Wray was an Assistant Chief and felt the Lt. was too valuable an asset to the department and community an therefore overlooked the mess. Not long after this mess this Lt. did not get promoted to Captain and felt it was racism. He filed a complaint with city H.R. How do you think Wray felt since he saved the Lt????? Thus the ugly story started...I smell vendetta!
what is being stepped around....well...dont u think it is a conflict of interest? with all the uncertainty and leaks and secret agreements...is it ok for him to gain financially from this deal? also...why was the first appraisal rushed? it was...tom phillips put a stop to that..wonder who leaked that bit of info to him so he could see how bad the first appraisal was..mitch sent essay an e mail saying the city would pay 3 million plus for it..the second appraisal is not done yet...the price of the property is inflated..it is worth one million probably...and it could take one million to clean it up..that means it may be worth a dollar. just admitting the editior and his wife are invovled is hardly addressing it ed...is it not a conflict? is every thing peachy and full of square dealing? i think not...
Tried to answer this once, comments glitched, just kill this if it's a repeat....
What is the conflict, or more accurately, between which parties is there a conflict?
Robinson's wife inherited an interest in a valuable property, located at a site the Coliseum covets.
Is it OK for the editor of the paper (or his family) to profit from the sale of this property?
Sure, why not?
The family is entitled to seek the best possible price for its property.
The City should seek the best possible price for the taxpayers.
The editor doesn't work for the City.
The potential conflict wouldn't be in the sale to the City, but in the coverage of the sale.
If the coverage is adequate, what is the problem?
the coverage is half assed...ed...u just dont want to see it...the coverage sux...it is a hazardous waste site..the first apprasial was very rushed...very incomplete...u cant see that if the paper is protecting any person that is gonna vote on this purchase it is a problem...u dont wanna see it...u want everything to be great and fine for your team. the coverage aint been about the first appraisal..it aint been about the underground tanks...it aint been about mitch e mailing offers b 4 the second appraisla is done...ed...i am done w u...u just dont wanna see it...like JR...even if the facts are right in front of his fucking face...he wont see them if it doesnt fit what they want....the steps at st james is a good example...it is a conflict...there is some fishy stuff. Thank the lord the N&R has u to defend them. are you sure JR doesnt work for the city? the coverage isnt adequate or however u spell that word...it is half assed ed....their is lots to the canada dry property. the N&R just barely covers it...it is good coverage to u and JR..and that is all that matters..the big rich boys have said this is ok...then it is ok...
Damn this thing keeps eating my comments.
Ben, I've been asking you to clarify your statements, and you have been clarifying them, and now your vague accusations have turned into a specific statement that the paper is undercovering this story.
That's pretty interesting.
You're welcome.
I could do without the innuendo towards me, though. I've been supportive of you through ups and downs, as you well know, and I've respected you and your work. You might want to check yourself and quit picking fights where there is no need to fight.
A useful idiot, huh Chewie? That smarts real bad... I have been quite critical of both the N&R and our City Council over the past three years - or at least I thought I had been...
But still, you might have a point. I'll have to think about your characterization before I decide if I agree with you.
*********************
Ben, lots of questions for you...
If I were to call Mazie Ferguson and convince her to give me three hours with her copy of the RMA report... and...
If what I read during my three hours agreed with the particulars I read about in the N&R... and...
If I wrote my next column or a long blog post that confirmed what had been previously reported...
Would you believe what I had to say, or would you think I was being a useful idiot? Would I only be useful genius if drew completely different facts from the RMA report than what was already reported?
While I have no doubt that you are getting a different side to things from your contacts, is it possible that you are being a useful idiot, but for a different agenda than what you perceive me as forwarding?
Also...
I am not a journalist, not even a reporter in the traditional sense... I am a guy with opinions who learned a thing or two about writing - mainly in high school.
I don't spend hours out of my week gathering intelligence (or stupidity) - I just don't have that kind of luxury of time... I work 10 hours a day. What I do is respond to what I know.
Granted, I get a large part of my news from the N&R - but I am also try to get a balance from personal contacts including blogs - including yours...
I take all of what i know and spin it into something that is hopefully coherant and interesting for others to read and have been doing it for several years now. It is what I do, and what I love
It took me two hours to write what i submitted to the N&R - it was a piece of cake. I can spit out 600 words like others take a dump and I do it many times per month - without pay. ...and you never get bent out of shape over it. Why now?
Is it because I made a few bucks by sending one of my blog posts for publication in a newspaper that was going to be read by more than just you, me and 20 others here in the local blogosphere?
My stripes have not changed, but my moniker has, apparently. A useful idiot? ...As I said... I'll have to think on that one... but you should, too.
Hogg,
I never said u were an idiot...my whole thing was the N&R is in deep w the city. things like leaks, secret tapings revealed, both are on a wray hunt and the canada dry building sale is a wee bit fishy..all i asked u in your original post was...what do u know? what is fact? still waiting...as far as the N&R blogger stuff...i just said...yeah..if I were in that deep i would wanna make me some close buddies too..that is all...your column fit right in w councila nd the city..to me...they are running a biased hunt..they are chasing wray the same way they saw wray chased hinson...i didnt say anything about u cept u were one of my fav's and a certain future council person...u said.."What we know is bad enough" what do we know? I never said u r an idiot...i just wanted u to lay out what u know...and u aint done that yet
ed,
i have no idea what i am thanking u for. but..it is not unusual for u to try to make it seem u r the only one that knows stuff and u r the only one who can help the lil folks understand...u stick up 4 the paper and the power folks quick..the story is undercovered...i sadi that bunches..it just took u a while to admit it...u aint big enuff to tell me to check myself..i didnt pick a fight..i asked hogg to tell me what he knew...and that didnt happen..what did happen was the great ed cone came and said i greatly overestiamted the N&R's control over its writers..and about how people have been saying this is about more than race for awhile...both of those are wrong. i hardly picked a fight..a fight? have u ever even been in a fight? i didnt make vauge accusations. You said i did...as far as the innuendos...u mean big rich boys...is that not true? and ed.....u linked to me a few times and when u once supported the gtrc u got on me for saying how bullshit it all was...now u see what i was saying huh... u dont have the size nor the balls to tell me to check myself...if u want me to check myself..meet me in person and tell me that..check myself? do u realize who u just said that to? what have i done for gso? check that.
Well, that got complex.
"Useful idiot" is a term that describes a relationship. It doesn't mean someone is an idiot, or that they are even aware of or involved, but that some other entity intends to use them to advance an agenda by channeling what that person naturally does or says anyway. It reflects negatively on the user in the relationship, not the usee.
It how sectors of the Republican political machine described conservative Christians in the 2004 election - as their "useful idiots." They used people's heartfelt values about issues as gay marriage to get their incompetent nincompoops into office.
I thought that was what T-man was saying about how the N&R was using Hoggard.
One thing I'm sure of is that no one here suffers from lower than average intelligence.
ok...i said a whole bunch of dumb stuff...that takes away from the argument....ed...i got lots of respect for u...u have done tremendous work in making blogging important..u could not be replaced in that regard..u also have gone out of your way more than a few times to see if my head had exploded...the gtrc is not bullshit...they are not...thye work hard...the staff does...the report will be out and we shall see if it can help gso...god knows...gso can get all the help it needs...ed...u bring up good points...u always do...i acted really nasty...this stuff is really close to my heart..and i get kinda pissed off quickly..i shoulda walked away and came back later...i dont want to take away from what i was trying to say...chewie breaks it down better than me...i just want to say...hey...i know that cussing and talking too much trash can take away from my point..and it can take away from supprt..which u have done ed..u have...hogg has too...watch your back folks..this stuff is very very very complex and extremely ugly..i am gonna try harder not to be..i still think the N&R stinks....pew wee
Thanks, Ben. Water over the dam.
You do a lot of great work here, and passions run high.
"this stuff is extremely ugly..i am gonna try harder not to be."
I'm still working on that one, too.
"It how sectors of the Republican political machine described conservative Christians in the 2004 election - as their "useful idiots."
It's also how Lenin supposedly described idealistic members of the leftist movement, including the American Left, and their support of what he and his successor stood for throughout the first part of the 20th century.
