Statement from SBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Kanawha Perry regarding an investigation into members of the Greensboro Police Department:
After a review of information received from the Greensboro Police Department, the Special Prosecutions Division of the North Carolina Attorney General's Office requested that the State Bureau of Investigation conduct a criminal investigation into allegations of possible corrupt activities by current and former members of the Greensboro Police Department.
The investigation began on June 16, 2006. The agents were given several allegations to investigate that involved potential violations of the law, including: illegal wiretaps; extortion; illegally accessing government computers; obstruction of justice; failure to discharge official duties; misuse of position by public officials; altering or falsifying documents; kidnapping and felonious restraint. Between June 2006 and February 2007, the agents uncovered evidence of violations of both the North Carolina criminal statutes and the Greensboro Police Department Policy and Procedures. Several issues that were determined by the Attorney General's office to be possible violations of department policy were referred to the Greensboro Police Internal Affairs Division. Other matters were determined to not involve either criminal or departmental violations.
Some issues were determined to be criminal violations that could not be pursued or prosecuted because the two year statute of limitations on misdemeanors had lapsed by the time sufficient evidence was brought to light. Because the statute of limitations had lapsed, the officers who potentially would have been charged for those misdemeanor crimes were not able to be charged criminally.
On Monday, September 17, 2007, SBI Agents went before a Guilford County Grand Jury and presented evidence on Sergeant William Tom Fox and Detective Scott E. Sanders, members of the former Special Intelligence Division of the Greensboro Police Department. The Grand Jury returned True Bills of Indictment on the following charges:
Sanders: 2 counts of Felonious Obstruction of Justice, 1 count of Felonious Conspiracy to Obstruct Justice, 1 count of Felonious Accessing a Government Computer.
Fox: 1 count of Felonious Obstruction of Justice, 1 count of Felonious Conspiracy to Obstruct Justice.
We cannot comment further on these pending charges.

Watch the SlayWray crowd to blow this thing all out of proportion.
What's interesting about this information is the lack of legal action on other issues involved.
Trouble,
Any info on who had the charges that passed the limitations?
just looked up gs 14-221 thru 14-227 obstructing justice...not sure which felony section of the law the sbi applied to the officers. do you know trouble?
Thank you Ben for keeping us up on all happenings with accurate and full information. As usual I am standing by waiting for more information from you. Brenda Bowers
I think the public should be able to know the names of the other officer's,and those officers should be fired from the police Dept. Look at it like this. They did it then, and are even more aptt to do it again. Also how can the public trust the police if they can't trust it's officer's. Get the names out, and get them out.
I would love to see the full list of any allegations that were proven to be true, including -- misdemeanors & dept. violations against both current and former officers, and the evidence to back them up. Then shit-can everybody who's guilty.
Wasn't Mitch Johnson Chief of Police in June of 2006?????
after reading the indictment from the sbi, i have to say what a piss poor job of a 2 year investigation. the sbi should and will be embarassed when this goes to trial (if it does). felony charges because the officers didn't want info shared with other officers and because one officer said they might be "dirty cops"! have they heard of the term "need to know", just cause you work in the same unit does not give you access to privilege information that is being conducted by another officer. i've seen misdemeanor charges for obstruct and delay with more meat in them than this bill. truly a ham sandwich has been served.
What about the claims of extortion, kidnapping, wire tapping? They are all felonies, no misd. We were led to believe these laws had been violated, what happened?
I can't help but assume that Sanders and Fox hid the seizure of the laptop from all and did this on their own, generated no documentation and surely did not involve the SBI with illegal activity. How stupid can one be to knowingly and willingly commit a felony and at the same time involve another LEA. It just doesn't make sense.
Did they camo the laptop so the SBI agent would not recognize it? Maybe they thought the SBI computer forensic expert would not discover who owned the laptop during the examination?
OR maybe this is just the best the year long investigation could find. No extortion, no kidnapping, no wiretapping, just a laptop in an office being used by a Greensboro detective under investigation.
MITCH JOHNSON is vindicated!!!
Voters we need new leadership in our City Council.
There isn't a statute of limitations on a Felony in North Carolina friends, so here is yet another "window dressing" excuse. All this time...all our tax money...and this is the best they can do? Burn two white cops...two white cops who had reputations for being honest, good, fair, hard workers, truthful, and of otherwise unblemished character. I am ashamed to live here. The town is being run by crooks. Where is Charles Bronson when you need him?
